Lexical Markers of Evidentiality on Vernacular Malay Dialect used by The Speech

Abstract

This study talks about lexical markers of evidentiality used by the speech community of
Bahasa Kualuh. Bahasa Kualuh belongs to the Malay dialect repertoire. The data was utterances
dealing with lexical makers of evidentiality that exist in face to face communication and employed
from ten native speakers who were 35 up to 45 years old. It is found; the indicator of lexical markers of evidentiality evokes in two formulas. The first one is the quotative marker of evidentiality, supports the evidence-based under the speaker judgment, then he reports the result to the hearer. The markers are kotonyo (he says), dibilangnyo (it is told by someone), ado yang bilang (someone says). The second one is sensory evidential markers, which related to the evidential information based on human senses. they are evidential of visual, non-visual and the evidential of auditory. The visual lexical markers are; manengok (to see), tengok (to look at) pandang (to watch), mamandang (to star). The non-visual lexical markers are; rupo-ruponyo (maybe), agak or agak-agaknyo (seem), and gayogayonyo (probably). The evidential of auditory is characterized by the lexical; dongar (to hear) and mandongar (to listen). The lexical markers of evidentiality are compulsory in Kualuh language.

Language Choice by Bilingual Speech Community of Acehnese in Family Domain in Medan: A Case Study

Abstract 

This study is a case study that covers the presentation formats for language choice on the speech
community of Acehnese based upon family domains in bilingual Indonesian speech behavior.
The sources of variance are between Aceh and Indonesian languages in Medan. The parameters
that are being used first through language choice between Indonesian, Indonesian/Acehnese, and
Acehnese relating to the role relationship between husband to wife; father, mother and their sons
and daughters. The second one is related to speech situation such as arguing, advising, chatting,
and persuading. The method approach is quantitative descriptive and was employed by the
samples of 200 persons. The result shows that the average persentage of the language choice
in every single speech situation among the husbands to the wives was 86% and the wives to the
husbands was 82% dominantly Acehnese. The average percentage of the language choice among
sons and daughters to their parents or vice versa was 76 % constantly mixing language; Acehnese/
Indonesian in all of speech situations. The result of this study showed that mostly the husbands
and the wives maintain their tribe language well. The result found that most of the children of
Acehnese never totally leave their tribe language, even they live in Medan as a big city.

Metaphorical Expression of Bahasa Aceh in Trumon of South Aceh: Ecolinguistics Study

Abstract

This study aims at describing metaphors of Bahasa Aceh that used by the language community in
Trumon. The metaphorical frames are structured by forms of interaction of two models; a source and a target domain. The method employed was qualitative approach and the data obtained was from six informants who were born in Trumon, the range of the ages was from 35 to 60 years and they also married the locals. The numbers of metaphors are thirty pieces which commonly used as vernacular. In general, metaphors of Bahasa Aceh in Trumon constituted by the nature of flora and fauna that exist in local surroundings as the source domain, and human’s behavior or his manner stands as the target domain. The source domain imposed some structure on the target by virtue of mapping that characterizing the metaphors. The relationship of both was processed in thought of the users, and also respected to the convention of the language community. In Trumon, star fruits are dried and called Asam Sunti and used as seasoning. No cook without asam sunti. Because of
asam sunti is highly needed, placed it as a source domain which is associatively infer a generous person who is continuously help others. The words ‘jih nyan asam sunti kamo (he is our asam sunti), convey metaphorical meaning ‘he is the generous person who always gives his hand to help others’.

Modals Used By the Speech Community of Bahasa Kualuh In Interpersonal Interactions

Abstract

Bahasa Kualuh is a vernacular language used by a speech community in Kualuh. Kualuh is a small
region on the coast of Malacca. It is one part of North Sumatera Province, Indonesia. The majority population in Kualuh is Malay. They call their language, bahasa Kualuh or cakap Kualuh. This study aims at describing modals of Bahasa Kualuh which commonly used by the speech community. The focus is on semantic field, refers to modals relating to aspect of meaning of utterances which convey alternative possibilities for how things could happen. Modals which come up for discussion are deontic and epistemic modals. The data was utterances which expressed modals in interpersonal interaction. The utterances obtained were from 6 native speakers as
the informants. They were born in Kualuh, the range of the ages was from 35 to 45 years and they also married the locals. This language inventories modals which can be expressed through three grammatical categories; adverbs “harus, mosti, sukat, the adjetives pasti,and pastilah” and verbs “biso, sanggup, kuaso, raso, kuraso, rasonyo, and kuagak”. The adverbs of harus, and mosti are used to express order or command. The adverbs of biso, sanggup and kuaso are used to show responsibilities, while the advers sukat is used to express obligatory. All of the modals mentioned above are classified as deontic modals. The adjectives pasti, and pastilah used to express degree of reality. The verbs raso, rasonyo, kuraso and kuagak used to express belief, these modals are characterized as epistemic modals. These two kinds of modals are commonly exist in the utterances of bahasa Kualuh in interpersonal interaction.

Assimilatory Process of Sound Changes from Proto-Austronesian to Bahasa Aceh

Abstract

Bahasa Aceh is used as a medium of communication in the language community of Aceh. Aceh is one of the provinces in Indonesia, called Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, and is situated in the northern part of Sumatera Island of Indonesia. This study aims at describing sound change of Proto-Austronesian to Bahasa Aceh which deals with various sub-type of assimilation along with a number of word examples were employed. The number of the vocabularies used as many as 200 pieces of words refers to the Swadesh word list. All the words were collected from two couples of husband and wife. These four informants are the native speakers of Bahasa Aceh, live in Banda Aceh, the capital city of the province. All of them were on their fifties. The most common type of sound change of Bahasa Aceh which underwent the assimilation is vowel harmony.

Abstract

This study talks about the interrelationship of bio-fisical nature of environtment with the language used by the language community of Bahasa Aceh in Trumon. The study covered by ecolinguistics which focused on metaphors that related to ecological environment, such as flora and fauna which evolved in human‟s cognitive. The theory applied is a collaboration of eco-linguistics theories those are three dimension social praxis theory and theory of ecolinguistics parameters. The method employed was qualitative approach and the data obtained was from eight informants who were born and live in Trumon. All of them are above fifties and they also married the locals. The result shows that in general the metaphorical expressions of Bahasa Aceh in Trumon are structured by the nature of flora and fauna that exist in local surroundings as the source domain that mapped to human‟s behavior or his manner as the target domain. The source domain imposed some structure on the target by virtue of mapping that characterizing the metaphors. The relationship of both was processed in thought of the language users, and also respected to the convention of the language community.

Abstract

Appraisal is the assesment from the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) that only focuses on the meaning of interpersonal. Theoritically, both judgment and attitude towards something stated by someone could be investigated from the interpersonal utterances that implemented. Due this phenomena, this study aims to examine people’s attitudes towards Prof. B.J. The ground theory used to analyze SFL and semantic theories. To achieve the objective of the research, qualitative method with content analysis was applied. Then, objects of research consisted of electronic-based text on social media, namely Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The results showed that there were tendency of using attitude patterns in texts on electronic-based social media, namely; the attitude of affect, judgment, and appreciation that realized through kinds of lexis, such as; sad, lost, mourning. In addition, the positive assessment also occured dominantly in which it was realized through kind of lexis that describes inspiration, kindness, role models, great, protective, contributing, best figure of Indonesian, father of technology. The tendency to use this attitude is absolutely because Prof. B.J. Habibie is recognized as the 3rd president of the Republic of Indonesia with higher intelligence that make him become well known figure not only in Indonesia but also in the world. Therefore, appraisal of this attitude was influenced by the exemplary attitude shown by Prof. B.J. Habibie to his family, to his country, and his passion as scientist.
